Washington's Robertson, UCF's Organ named Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week
Washington forward Mason Robertson and UCF goalkeeper Connie Organ are the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week for their on-field efforts Nov. 4-10.
The Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week are announced every Tuesday throughout the fall college season during the College Highlights and Rankings Show on NSCAATV.com. The program was expanded to include a men's and women's winner from all three NCAA divisions in 2013.
Robertson, a freshman from Phoenix, scored the game-winning goals in both of the No. 3 Huskies’ games last week. Against Stanford, Robertson headed in a corner kick from teammate Justin Schmidt from five yards out in the 30th minute.
The freshman forward followed up with the golden goal in Washington’s comeback win against No. 4 California. In the 2-1 overtime victory, Robertson sent the game-winner in with 37 seconds left in the extra period.
Both wins moved the Huskies in to first place in the Pac-12 with one game left for the top three teams in the conference (Washington, California and UCLA).
Organ came up big in UCF’s two American Athletic Conference championship games, as both went to penalty kicks and she was subbed in for both shootouts. Confronted with a 4-4 tie in the PK series against Rutgers, the Atlanta native stepped in the net facing the fifth and potentially game-deciding attempt. Organ went with her gut and made the save to keep UCF alive.
In the extended round, Rutgers sent Madison Tiernan up to face Organ, who dived to her right to clinch the first tournament title on UCF's home field since 2001.
With the wins, the Knights extended their school-record unbeaten streak to 18-straight and became the first team since 1996-97 (UNC-Greensboro) to win conference tournament titles in back-to-back years in two different conferences.
The next announcement of the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week will be Tuesday, Nov. 19 and will only include a men’s Division I selection.
