College Soccer Special heads to Maryland for Loyola, No. 23 UMBC Battle
The College Soccer Special will pit two local rivals against one another when No. 21 UMBC takes on Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 21, in men’s college soccer action.
Heading into this weekend’s match, both teams are unbeaten, as the Loyola Greyhounds are 5-0-1 overall and the UMBC Retrievers are undefeated at 6-0.
The Greyhounds have traditionally come out on top of the Retreivers, as the all-time series stands at 19-2-2 in favor of Loyola. However in their last meeting in 2012, it was UMBC that ended as the victors posting a 2-0 final score at home against Loyola.
Last season, Kadeem Dacres and Pete Caringi, III scored within six minutes of each other early in the second half to make the difference for the Greyhounds.
Caringi will look to be the difference for the UMBC squad again. The senior forward already has eight goals in just five games and is currently the leading the nation in points per game. He was named Disney/NSCAA Player of the Week on September 3 for his efforts on the field earlier in the season.
Dating back to last season, UMBC in now unbeaten in its last 15 competitions and has outscored their opponents 38-10 in that time. They are currently on their longest unbeaten streak since 1999.
Loyola is on a hot streak as well. The Greyhounds are off to their best start since their 2008 campaign. This is the fifth time the program has been unbeaten through the first five games at the Division I level.
The play of the Greyhound forwards has much to do with the team’s success. The trio of sophomore Larry Ndjock, junior Connor Thompson, and senior Stephen Dooley has yet to be stopped. These forwards have produced nine of the Greyhounds 10 goals and assisted almost half of those scores.
Ndjock is ranked third in the NCAA with six goals on the year and Dooley is ranked as well, sitting second nationally with four assists.
Game time is set for Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. ET with Dave Johnson and Keith Tabatznik on the call.
Johnson, who serves as Comcast SportsNet's television play-by-play voice for Major League Soccer's D.C. United and the radio announcer for the NBA's Washington Wizards, will call the action along with Tabatznik, former head coach at Georgetown University, as the color analyst for the game.
